Question
OpenVPN Error opening logfile for writing. You probably don't have administrator privileges
Answer

If you get an error message that looks like the one in the image below, when trying to connect to the VPN using the OpenVPN GUI, it may because you are already connected. See the details below to check if you are.

You can connect to your VPN with OpenVPN in two ways - manually or automatically when you turn on the computer. To connect manually, you open the OpenVPN GUI and right click the icon at the bottom right of the screen and choose connect. To connect automatically, the OpenVPN service is set to run automatically when the machine turns on, and connects automatically too. Follow the steps below to see if OpenVPN is set to start automatically when you turn on your computer:

  • Hold the Windows Key and press R to open the run box
  • Type "services.msc" and press enter to open the services window
  • Find the row with the name "OpenVPN Service"
  • Check the "Status" column. If it says the service is started, this is why you are getting the error when trying to manually connect to the VPN.
  • If you want to stop OpenVPN from automatically connecting, right click the OpenVPN service and click stop, then double click it and change the "Startup Type" to "Manual" and click OK.

  • You can now close the services window and re-try manually connecting to OpenVPN and you should not receive the error message.
